My Neighbor Totoro

Picture: 4 (pan & scan shit)
Sound: 7
Menus/Extras: 2
Overall: 5
Notes: This DVD is NOT OAR. It is Pan & Scan with no extras. The transfer is good though, I didn’t notice any obvious artifacting and the color was fantastic. Since the rights to distribute this film are owned by Fox until 2004 this is the only version we are going to get for a while. This is one of those times though when the price is right. MNT can be had for $9.99, and since there isn’t a better version in the near future I would recommend picking it up if you can stand Pan & Scam at all.

Repeat after me. Miyazaki is a god.

I’m not sure what I expected before seeing MNT, but I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t expecting a cat bus. The imagination factor in this film is off the scale. Like Princess Mononoke there were several scenes in MNT where I was just watching the screen with my mouth agape thinking, “What the hell. This is seriously cool.” I enjoyed the laid back pace of this movie also. If you have to have non-stop action then this may not be the film for you. This is a children’s movie at its finest, and I would stress “children’s movie.” It requires at least some memory of what it was like to be a child. In other words, “Don’t bother Drunken Master.”
